Eric lives with his mother and sister on the outskirts of Murang’a. Eric and his sister are sponsored by Roko 20 to a primary school education. He is in Grade 2. During the Covid-19 pandemic Eric and his sister spent their days collecting scrap metal from rubbish tips in and around the town of Murang’a. They would then sell the scraps of metal to a recycling site. This money helped their mother to buy food. Eric was not keen on this job and told his mother that it was too ‘dirty’. He started saving some of the money he earned and bought a few watermelons and pineapples. He set up a small roadside stall and started selling the fruit close to the local market of Mukuyu. With some of the income received he managed to buy himself a pair of school shorts, a shirt and a pair of shoes. In addition he also bought his sister a bucket which she uses for selling melons. Eric is just 8 years old. He is now smart and keeps himself tidy and clean. His mother is proud of him. |
